‘THE WEIGHT OF SALT’ and ‘UNWOVEN’

Penny’s research is based around the female labour force of the local Tyneside fishing industry. Formal structures are explored as are the fragility of more ephemeral substances such as salt. Conceptual ideas reflecting the passage of time often underlie the physical aspect of the work. Autonomy within a collective is also a recurring theme.

‘THE WEIGHT OF SALT’ and ‘UNWOVEN’ Both these works use the materiality of everyday industry to reinterpret the strength and fragility of the individual. ‘THE WEIGHT OF SALT’ uses fabric and salt to explore how we impart our individuality onto set parameters.

In ‘UNWOVEN’ individual willow wands are elevated, expressing their own singularity before being potentially woven into functionality. The staith like structure surrounding them emphasising the constriction of conformity.
